The partnership between FCVic and Social Security Rights Victoria (SSRV), the Integrated Services Project (ISP), aims to improve client outcomes through financial counsellors and social security lawyers working together more effectively.
Whilst we are always keen to hear directly from financial counsellors and their clients about concerns with social security and Centrelink legal issues, here are a few suggestions for where you might be able to act directly on your client’s behalf:
Centrelink Community Engagement
We have recently noted an encouraging trend in responding to queries about clients and a preparedness to respond promptly. The [email protected] email is a useful starting point in seeking clarification as to how your client is placed, and whether any reviews are pending.
Centrelink Debt Recovery Line
Fortnightly deductions from benefits are often overlooked. Clients are often also not aware of what is left to repay. Where clients are struggling in making other payments as a result, or are considering an appeal or review of a given debt, then contacting Centrelink to request a reduction in amount or a stop for a period, typically 3 months, can be a useful immediate action for your client. Call the Centrelink Debt Recovery Line on 1800 076 072.

Thank you to those financial counsellors who are regular users of our referral and secondary consultation services through the Worker Helpline – www.ssrv.org.au/worker-assistance/. We are looking forward to meeting next month with the New Financial Counsellor Community of Practice, and invite anyone with any questions about how we can help with your awareness of how our resources can assist your casework and clients.
