Financial Vulnerability in Older Victorians

Resources Page

We welcome colleagues who work with older Victorians to our Financial Vulnerability in Older Victorians resources page.

Through the Financial Vulnerability in Older Victorians program we are encouraging our colleagues who regularly engage with older Victorians to keep an eye out for their financial wellbeing as well. As people grow older, they may experience financial difficulty – whether through changed circumstances, difficulty in accessing their affairs reliably and safely, or other causes of hardship, such as scams or the expectation they will support others. Financial counsellors can work alongside an older person to help them to stay on track and resolve money problems. More about the program…

About the program

Financial counsellors are qualified professionals providing free, confidential and independent support and advocacy to individuals experiencing financial hardship. Their work is person-centred and strengths-based; they listen to the participant’s story and help with options that respond to their needs and preferences. By identifying options, the financial counsellor empowers the participant to make better choices and improve their situation.

Financial counsellors mostly operate from non-profit agencies and work under credit licence and financial services licence exemptions which permit them to access financial information and negotiate with creditors on the participant’s behalf (with their consent). Practical assistance of this kind is of great value in resolving confusion and relieving participants’ stress.
