As we step into sunny October, we are approaching a significant time of year for our sector, with two key events just around the corner: the FCVic Conference from 9–11 October and Anti-Poverty Week from 13–19 October. Both events provide crucial platforms for us to come together, share insights, and continue advocating for systemic change, especially in these challenging times.
In this edition, we spotlight the importance of five minutes – a reminder of how small actions, like taking a moment to lodge a complaint, can lead to powerful outcomes. Recently, the Essential Services Commission issued nearly $1.7 million in penalties to energy retailer Engie, following a complaint made by one of our member financial counsellors. This is a testament to the importance of speaking up and how our daily efforts can influence real, systemic change, protecting vulnerable clients.
As we look ahead to the FCVic Conference, I’m excited about the opportunity to connect with many of you. This year’s program offers a wealth of learning and engagement, and I’m particularly looking forward to the keynote address from Petris Lapis, who will be exploring the journey from fear to fearless. With a hearty mix of panel discussions, presentations from members and sector colleagues, and breakout professional development sessions, this conference promises to spark important conversations that will shape the future of our work.
Anti-Poverty Week, following closely after the Conference, closely reflects FCVic’s mission for “a fairer and more equitable society with improved community wellbeing and better lives for vulnerable people.” It offers a vital opportunity to draw attention to the challenges faced by many in our communities and renew our commitment to providing support where it’s needed most. Together, we can continue to push for meaningful change and a more just society.
I encourage everyone to stay engaged – whether through attending the Conference, participating in Anti-Poverty Week initiatives, or continuing your everyday advocacy. Every action we take contributes to the collective impact we’re making, and together, we can drive the change we want to see
Looking forward to seeing many of you soon!
