Connect with CARE is Neami’s new in-house suicide prevention and intervention training package, made up of five key elements: Connect, Collaborate, Acknowledge, Reflect and Empower. Each element explores suicide prevention and intervention approaches in a manner that meets legal and ethical obligations whilst upholding recovery-oriented practice principles.

Upon successful completion of this session participants will be able to:

  • Understand suicide and how perceptions and language promote recovery and build resilience.
  • Understand how emotional intelligence supports staff to be responsive to consumers in times of need.
  • Use coaching skills to explore suicide thoughts and feelings with consumers in a way that promotes decision making, autonomy and opportunities to cope.
  • Understand the concept of suicidal ambivalence and importance of acknowledging suicidal distress.
  • Recognise context, adversity and explore risk and protective factors through safety planning.
  • Balance a respectful response to distress by upholding both legal and ethical considerations in alignment with the Collaborative Recovery Model (exploring Duty of Care and Dignity of Risk).
  • Engage with a consumer and their informal and formal supports to understand, assess and respond to suicidal thoughts and feelings.
  • Demonstrates capacity to identify and respond to warning signs that indicate suicide risk and vulnerability with consumers, leadership and other relevant stakeholders.
