The beginning of the year marks an exciting period, following a (hopefully rejuvenating) break, filled with the promise of new beginnings and changes. In the context of FCVic and the financial counselling sector, several noteworthy changes have taken place this month.
Within FCVic, we are pleased to welcome Amanda Chan to the role of Advocacy Coordinator. FCVic plays a crucial role in advocating for financial counsellors and community members on systemic issues contributing to poverty and financial hardship. The Advocacy Coordinator is tasked with coordinating FCVic’s advocacy activities, guided by systemic and strategic issues identified by FCVic members. We are eager to witness the impactful contributions Amanda will make with and for our members throughout the year.
On the external front, it was announced today that Fiona Guthrie will be stepping down as CEO of Financial Counselling Australia next month. FCA’s Board has appointed Dr. Domenique Meyrick and Peter Gartlan as joint CEOs in her stead. Fiona has been an influential voice in the sector for 15 years, leaving an indelible legacy. We extend our best wishes to her and look forward to collaborating with Domenique and Peter to continue advancing our sector.
Taking a broader perspective at the national financial counselling level, today’s announcement of a $114.8 million boost to Financial Wellbeing and Capability grant programs has the potential to have a significant impact this year. The additional and ongoing funding will address the demand for critical frontline services over the next five years, ensuring stability for various organisations, including those providing emergency relief and financial counselling. For more details, you can read the media release from The Hon Amanda Rishworth MP here.
Lastly, a reminder that FCVic is a member organisation, and we value input from our members in our current 2024 Membership Feedback Survey. Member feedback is instrumental in guiding us to ensure that financial counsellors across Victoria feel seen, heard, and supported. The survey concludes on Friday, 16 February. Members can click here to provide feedback, helping us better understand your needs and how we can effectively meet them.
