Telephone financial counselling skills – using an interpreter

The Telephone Counselling Skills training program has been developed to provide FCs with a framework to work effectively in assisting clients over the phone. In this session, presenters have focused on using a telephone interpreting service. Using an interpreter while dealing with a client over the telephone requires a particular set of skills. This session was an interactive workshop designed for the development of these skills.
The session was delivered by a senior Consumer Action financial counsellor, who has extensive experience working with interpreters on the National Debt Helpline.

Lapse and relapse when working with people affected by gambling harm

This session has drawn attention to the different stages of addiction and what might trigger clients to lapse and relapse. The presenters have identified the differences between lapse and relapse and discussed effective FC case work when working with clients in various stages. Further to that they have looked at the impact the lapse and relapse of a client can have on the practitioner and their sense of efficacy and achievement within their role.

Case Support, Insurance Brokers and Small Business in Disaster Recovery

This session was divided into a few sections: The first presenter discussed the Case Support role funded to support clients recovering from a disaster.
In the second presentation, participants learned about the Insurance Brokers Code and the role of the IBCCC (Insurance Brokers Code Compliance Committee) in addressing reported breaches. The discussion also covered the role of insurance brokers in providing appropriate insurance products for clients and support to them following a disaster event.
In the third presentation, participants received an overview of the types of (and limitations of) insurance available to small businesses that may be applicable in the event of a disaster; and explored the legal aspects of complex cases and claims.
Participants have also received an update on the Partners in Wellbeing /Small Business program, and how it relates to small businesses affected by flood, and a summary of FCVic resources available to assist financial counsellors assisting small businesses.
