Mortgage stress is a complex problem. It is always overlaid with other legal, financial, social and health issues, which must be considered in casework for safety and prevention of homelessness. This session unpacks mortgage stress, how it presents and how best to respond. We cover the layers of complexity, such as economic abuse, accidents, COVID, mental health, changes in the housing market, and how you might address these issues in your casework. We outline the legal frameworks and protections for casework, and importantly, use scenarios to discuss and demonstrate the importance of strategy when supporting clients with assets and who are at risk of homelessness.

National Redress Scheme Guide
The National Redress Scheme (NRS) is making redress payments of up to $150,000 to survivors of institutional child sexual abuse in Australia. Some recipients will be managing a large lump sum of money for the first time in their lives, and many are vulnerable due to issues that include ongoing trauma, mental and physical health issues, and questions of capacity.
This guide is for financial counsellors, community lawyers and caseworkers assisting clients in this unique situation.

Navigating the Child Support system

Navigating the Child Support system training has provide an opportunity to better understand the child support system and its challenges. People in hardship can be on the receiving or the paying end of child support. For the receiving parent, child support entitlements and different collection options are relevant and will be explored. They may also need help to deal with a Centrelink overpayment, as child support and family tax benefit payments are inter-related. Some of your clients might benefit from the change of assessment, or income declaration forms. The latter being more applicable to the paying parent who might be in financial hardship and struggle to make those payments. It has become apparent that child support payments can often be linked to economic abuse and family violence, presenters have explained this further in detail.
